5 tips to start your search for a senior community – Newton Daily News

An independent or assisted living community may be the answer to a prayer for many seniors. Facilities differ in cost, amenities, and available locations, so it’s a good idea to start your research early. If you or a loved one are considering making the transition to a retirement home, here are 5 tips to keep in mind.

1. Make a list of your needs and wants. Consider your “must-haves,” such as a facility that allows pets, offers 24/7 nursing care, or is close to family. You should also indicate what you would like to have, such as on-site suites for visitors or a fitness center with swimming pool.

2. Set a budget so you know what you can afford. Determine which of your regular expenses will be included in the monthly fee, such as meals and utilities. Don’t forget to consider additional financial resources, such as long-term care insurance or veterans’ benefits.

3. Consider acceptable locations. If you absolutely must stay close to home or near a major medical center, you can narrow your search to meet those needs.

4. Do various types of research. Search online for seniors’ residences in your preferred location that fit your budget and meet your needs. A facility’s website should describe the amenities, services, continuum of care provided, and all life-enriching programs and activities available. Family, friends, neighbors, doctors, or a local clergy member may also have ideas to help you in your search.

5. Make preliminary contact and arrange a visit. Seeing an installation in person will go a long way in deciding if this is the right choice for you. Bring a relative or friend for a second opinion. Watch to see how residents and staff interact and look for safety features that are important to you, such as handrails and emergency call systems. If you think this could be your next home, your search is over!
