Before leaving military service – pre-release claims

If you are a member of the armed forces on active duty or on full-time National Guard duty, you must apply through the VA Pre-discharge Claim Program before leaving the service.

Veteran Readiness and Employment Benefits for Military and Veterans

The best way to apply for Veteran Readiness and Employment Services is to apply online at va.gov/careers-employment. To submit a paper application, download and complete a VA Form 28-1900, “Disabled Veterans Application for Vocational Rehabilitation” and mail it to your local regional office. You can also visit your local regional office and submit your application for processing.

Disability Awards for Veterans

The best way to file a claim for disability compensation is to apply online at www.va.gov/disability.

To submit a paper claim, download and complete VA Form 21-526EZ, “Request for Disability and Related Compensation Benefits” and send the claim to:

VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (VA DIC) benefits for spouses, dependents and parents

If you are the surviving spouse or child of a military member who died on active duty, your Military Casualty Assistance Officer will help you complete an application for DIC, Death Benefit, and/or Surviving Spouse or Child Accrued Benefits (VA Form 21P-534a). The agent will help you send the form to the correct regional VA office.

Home Loan Benefits for Military and Veterans

You can apply for a home loan eligibility certificate online using eBenefits. You can also apply for a home loan eligibility certificate through your lender.

To apply by mail, download and complete Form VA 26-1880, “Application for Certificate of Eligibility” and send it to the regional loan center that serves your state.

Home Loan Benefits for Survivors

Download and complete Form VA 26-1817, “Request for Determination of Loan Guaranty Eligibility – Unmarried Surviving Spouses”. You can also call 1-877-827-3702 and follow the prompts for “Eligibility” and we’ll send you the form. Mail your completed application to the Regional Lending Center that serves your state.

Life Insurance Benefits for Military, Veterans and Survivors

Military Group Life Insurance (SGLI): SGLI coverage is automatic. You don’t need to apply. To designate beneficiaries or reduce, deny or reinstate SGLI coverage, you must use the SGLI Online Registration System (SOES) or SGLV Form 8286, Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Election and Certificate.

Family Members Group Life Insurance (FSGLI): To deny, reduce, or reinstate FSGLI coverage, complete and file Form SGLV 8286A, “Election and Certificate of Spouse Coverage,” with your service location.

Military Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) Traumatic Injury Protection Program: To apply for TSGLI benefits, complete and file Form SGLV 8600, “Application for TSGLI Benefits” with your branch of service. Coverage for this benefit is automatic for all service members covered by SGLI.

Disabled Service Veterans Insurance (S-DVI): To file for S-DVI, apply online using the Online Access webpage or complete VA Form 29-4364, “Application for Service-Disabled Veterans’ Insurance.”

Veterans Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI): To apply for VMLI, complete and submit VA Form 29-8636, “Veterans Mortgage Life Insurance Application” to your Specially Adapted Housing Officer.
