As Senior Editor of the Newsroom of new sourceI often point out to our editorial team that the most meaningful recognition of our investigative reporting is whenever there is a concrete, positive change in the community as a direct result of our work.
And while we’re still very focused on community impact, we take great pride in having our journalism recognized by our industry peers.
End of July, new source was presented with 21 Awards for Impactful Journalism from the San Diego Society for Professional Journalists. The awards included nine top prizes, the Diversity Award and a special Community Impact Award.
Investigative journalist Jennifer Bowman won the Diversity Award for “Reporting Accountability in Communities of Color.” The award recognized Bowman’s work on stories that examined COVID-19 infection and vaccination rates in underserved communities in San Diego and Imperial counties, transit center inadequacy of San Ysidro and the disproportionate rates at which school districts refer minority students and children with special needs. to the police.
Investigative and data journalist Jill Castellano won the Neil Morgan Community Impact Award for her “Mission Act” reporting project that exposed systemic nationwide problems with how the Veterans Administration canceled medical care decisions regarding veterans’ health care. The judges said, “Stellar work that is carefully reported, sensitive and skilfully written. new source exemplifies investigative journalism at its highest level.
Mission Act also won other awards, with the judges saying the story “exemplifies why investigative and surveillance journalism matters.”
Our 1st place awards also included coverage of racial clauses in property records, the increase in heat-related deaths in an Imperial County community, and the impact of fires on access to home insurance for San Diegans.
Our strong performance in the journalism contest reminds us of our community’s enormous appetite for unbiased, fact-based accountability reports that expose issues and improve the quality of life for people in the San Diego area and beyond.
