Shrewsbury – Michael A. “Mike” Tompkins, 86, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, died peacefully Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Manor in Portland, Maine.
Mike had predeceased his wife of 60 years, Marianne (Torrens) Tompkins. He was survived by his sons, Brian A. Tompkins of Norwich, Vermont and Keith W. Tompkins of Portland, Maine, his three grandchildren and their mothers.
Born small and precocious, in a low birth year on September 30, 1935. Mike’s arrival at Dartmouth College from Worcester Academy in 1953 was described by his friend John Fishburn as “an instantly friendly, handsome, intelligent, athletic guy , gregarious, quick-witted and full of spirit”. Prior to starting in Dartmouth, the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va., had appointed Mike as a second lieutenant, teaching air intelligence at Marine Corp Air Station Kanehoe, Hawaii. Arriving in Hawaii as a newlywed, he returned to Worcester a father, who began a 38-year stint with Paul Revere Life Insurance. Mike then formed a
financial advisory activity, until his retirement as an investment advisor at 3D Asset Management in 2020.
Additionally, Mike loyally served Dartmouth and its Class of 1957, particularly as permanent meetings chairman. He also coordinated interviews with former students in Worcester County for decades. Brian’s class of 1982 assumed and maintained the philanthropic legacy of 57 years (annual scholarships, Dickey Foundation, etc.).
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend for visitation hours on Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by interment at Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury
