New IAM Veteran Services Program Proves Huge Success in Helping Members Obtain Earned VA Benefits

Machinist’s Union Veterans Services Coordinator Richard Evans leads the IAM’s Veterans Services program, helping members who are U.S. veterans understand and apply for the benefits they have earned after serving.

Since Evans’ appointment as coordinator, effective April 1, 2022, the program has already

  • Won back pay for veterans totaling over $300,000
  • 38 veteran claims have been confirmed
  • Upgrading Eight Veterans’ Disability Status to 100% Permanent and Total
  • Helped two veterans considered homeless
  • Participated in and won the Board of Veterans Appeals and identified 15 deviations through the high level review process
  • Found two “Clear and Undeniable Errors” (CUE) on previously confirmed veterans’ claims (resulting in the granting of five-year retroactive benefits totaling 50% and over $25,000 in back pay).

The 38 veterans assisted have a total of 23 spouses and 42 children who will also benefit from this assistance. Currently, the program is working on 74 active claims and hopes to have more wins as more veteran members discover this resource.

Not only does the Veterans Services program help veterans properly apply for VA benefits and compensation, it also offers assistance with education, employment, home loans, insurance -life, pension, health care and burial.
