Waltham resident receives veterans service award

At a VFW Auxiliary State Meeting held July 24, VFW State Commander Doug Wood and former VFW State Commander Russ Jobe presented awards from the VFW organization of the ‘state to the VFW Auxiliaries and members who have excelled in the Auxiliary’s mission to help veterans during the 2020 campaign. -21, including member Kelly Durkee-Erwin, of Waltham.

Durkee-Erwin was named Auxiliary Member of the Year 2020-21, after being recommended by VFW and Auxiliary members for the award due to the work she had done during the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of his district, Durkee-Erwin also accepted the 2020-21 VFW State District of the Year Award for District 18. Later that day, the VFW Auxiliary announced that District 18 and Speaker Durkee-Erwin were first in the state for the 2022 Membership Drive. Durkee-Erwin accepted the award from former state speaker Beth Barrett.

Durkee-Erwin raised funds to install a ramp at the home of a locked-down veteran and facilitated money pools in conjunction with Waltham Mutual Aid and Ward 6 Councilor Sean Durkee, Chairman of the Veterans Committee, for help veterans pay financial bills and obtain reusable medical equipment trade with the Waltham Council on Aging. She also organized the donation and delivery of two motorized scooters and drove many veterans to medical appointments when volunteer drivers had stopped providing service due to COVID-19 restrictions. She delivered food to families of medically compromised veterans in the Metrowest area in conjunction with Healthy Waltham and the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation and also transported donations from Waltham residents to veterans housed at Bedford Medical Centers. , Brockton and Jamaica Plain Veterans Administration and to the Ludlow Veterans Service Officer for veterans locked up in that community.

Durkee-Erwin is employed as an ISP specialist to help veterans with special needs find employment in eastern Massachusetts, then spends her free time volunteering to serve veterans in her community and at home. -of the.
